Sibenik and Krka

When your morning starts like ours did, you know that the day is promising. At 7:00 a.m. the ship started a slow sail into the port of Sibenik. As we were approaching the port we were surrounded by the welcoming scenery of the canal of Sveti Ante, which gave the photographers a lot of excellent shots. Once we docked in Sibenik, we enjoyed our breakfast and gained strength to start exploring the beauties of the River Krka.

Our guide Ante was waiting for us on the pier and welcomed us all. We took a 20-minute drive up to National Park Krka, one of two national parks in Sibenik – Knin County. Krka is a 72.5-km-long river that floats through Knin Field and Kos Field, after which it turns into a canyon. There are seven waterfalls on the river, with the most important one called Skradinski buk. Right next to Skradinski buk is the third oldest power plant in world, Jaruga, which is about to be transformed into a museum. After having a wonderful walk through the park and getting to know more about the various species that live in the park, some of us took a nice swim next to the famous waterfall and others enjoyed bird watching, a nice walk or peace in the shade.

Our expedition continued in Sibenik, which is the only Dalmatian city not founded by old Greeks or Romans, but by Croats in 11th century. Among the Croats it is called the town of Kresimir, after a Croatian king. Because of the reign of Venice for almost 400 years, we could notice a lot of Italian influence in this medieval town, especially in front of breathtaking St. Jacob’s Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Back on Panorama we enjoyed our lunch, after which we had a rest waiting to hear Sharon’s talk about photography, which gave us a new perspective on what our cameras can do. Thanks to Sharon we shall have some excellent shots to show our family and friends.

Our evening recap gave us a full perspective on the differences between the American and Croatian education systems. Because the interpretation was so interesting and funny, we were in a great mood to have dinner and have fun starting new friendships.
