Genovesa Island
The year is drawing to a close, yet the cycle of life seen so vividly in these islands seems to know no beginning or end. One day may blend into the next for many creatures (what with no itinerary or plans for the future to make). Different seasons require different behaviors, and a change in climate requires a change in behavior. December transitions into January as cool moves into warm.
A male frigate bird or two was seen with his gular pouch semi-inflated, indicating the very beginnings of what will potentially be a season of frenzied courting. Red footed booby chicks huddled down in nests in palo santo trees, while Nazca booby chicks squawked and pumped air with wings reminiscent draped feather boas. Juvenile boobies with their license to fly came out to sit on the ship’s riggings and wires. Sea lions slept on the beach, as did some of us.
Many have been thinking of our loved ones up north these past few days of the holiday season, while we amble, walk or hike over these islands and swim, snorkel or dive into the warm waters of the Galápagos Islands.
Season’s greetings to all!
