Santa Cruz Island

We are back to the central part of the Galápagos Archipelago. Today we spent the whole day exploring the island of Santa Cruz, which is the operational center for the many tour boats anchored in Academy Bay. This bay was named after the schooner from the California Academy of Science that spent time here in the early nineteenth century.

Santa Cruz is one of the places where there is easy access to giant tortoises in the wild. After a moderate walk after lunch, we reached an area with about 10 tortoises happily grazing on the green and humid grass in the highlands.

Today we also had a taste of a typical town in the Galápagos, which also happens to be my hometown. I was born in Puerto Ayora, and even though its size has grown ten times in the last…(I won’t tell my age), it still preserves its lovely and tranquil life.

With tortoises, the visit to the headquarters of the National Park and Charles Darwin Research Station, and with a good walk through beautiful Puerto Ayora, we had a fulfilling day in Santa Cruz Island.
