Bartolome Island

“Steps, wooden steps, more than three hundred of them!” When one wakes up with that idea in mind, the body asks for more sleep, and not for steps. But once we looked outside and felt the warm breeze of Bartolome Island, we decided to conquer the steps and conquer the world. So off we went this morning, rode by panguero knights dressed in blue Lindblad jackets, mounted on huge panga-beasts, to walk up to the top of the world…well, the top of Bartolome. A spectacular view was the reward for our effort. All of the volcanic features in the Galápagos were exposed in front of us. We could see spatter cones, cinder cones and tuff cones. There were young lava flows, old lava flows, shield volcanoes and uplifted islands. We absorbed information as if reading a textbook of geology, or as if taking a complete course on volcanoes. Just by walking up the steps!

To reward the effort needed to see the outstanding view, there was an outstanding breakfast on board, and then, a golden beach where we refreshed our bodies and our souls. We then were ready for a new challenge, the black lava beach on Santiago Island, and our visitor site for the afternoon.
