Isabela and Fernandina Islands

It is always a wonderful experience to be here in Galápagos, especially when we are visiting the western side. We can describe our day as marvelous, as we had perfect weather, and we discovered so much.

During our morning we had a very close look at Pacific green sea turtles mating, and Galápagos penguins basking in the sun sharing their place with marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies watching us pass by. But more than anything, what a surprise to find the giant ocean sunfish (Mola mola) leaping in the distance! That was the moment when we decided to turn our Zodiacs around and follow these gentle creatures. Rafael, one of our naturalists, had taken the underwater camera with him just in case something marvelous showed up, and ended up jumping in to take some footage of this fish. As you can see, he was very succesful.

While snorkeling, sea lions and sea turtles were the main attraction. Even a penguin approached us!

The afternoon was very pleasant for walking as there were many flightless cormorants, penguins, marine iguanas, sea lions and Galápagos doves in the area. The colors of the vegetation was particularly special, because this is the time of the year when everything is becoming green and flowers are becoming plentiful.

At sunset we left the west and now we are traveling to our next destination, which is the island of Santa Cruz in the center of the archipelago of Galápagos.
