Española Island

A visit to the Galápagos archipelago is an unforgettable experience. The season that we are now experiencing is great. A bright sun is always shining against the most beautiful blue sky you can imagine above an ocean of clear, warm waters. The island we visited today is a very special one. The amount and variety of wildlife and the stunning volcanic landscape makes this island a definite highlight. As we disembarked we were greeted by a cheerful group of sea lions.

Several of the species found on this island are found nowhere else in the world. They are not even found anywhere else in the Galápagos, as they are endemic to Española! This simple fact is amazing. Sea lions, marine iguanas, lava lizards and many marine bird species delighted us this morning. It is particularly remarkable that all the wildlife can be so easily approached. Just take a look at today’s picture.

In the afternoon we visited an idyllic white sand beach where we strolled among the sea lions. Many of us enjoyed the underwater world via snorkeling or from our glass bottom boat. I must mention one rare sight that we witnessed. A couple of sea lions were chasing a white tipped shark. The chase was hilarious and also unusual. Reluctantly we returned to the ship as the sunset, our minds filled with new experiences and lovely memories.
