Genovesa Island

The exquisite combination of colors that we observe on this island comes near to perfection. This morning the sun was shining at its maximum against clear blue skies. The deep blue waters were calm and warm. Greens were present as well; some evergreen species of plants provided a touch of brightness to the dark colors of the lava. The sparkling white coraline beach contrasts and merges at the same time with the blues, greens and blacks.

This wonderful state-of-the-art setting is completed with the vivid colors of the island’s inhabitants. Some male frigates were showing off their beautiful red pouches. On this island there is a very large colony of great frigate birds. The swallow-tailed gulls were lovely as well. Many birders consider these endemic gulls to be one of the most beautiful species of gulls in the whole world. In their plumage, white, black, grey and red are combined in an artistic way. Just take a look at today’s photo.

Red-footed boobies are a real piece of artwork, too. What other tan colored marine birds have bluish beaks combined with a face that blushes with pink and is outlined with black markings. Finally, their bright red feet are a trademark that is hard to top. Red-billed tropicbirds sport long tails and an astonishingly white plumage, which contrasts with their black masks, and makes for a very handsome bird. I love this profusion of colors of varying hues and shades. It is almost inevitable that you have the feeling that you are immersed inside of a gorgeous painting. But it is a real and stunningly beautiful, living one. What a fabulous place to visit!
