Española Island
An extraordinary day filled our guests’ hearts and minds with new discoveries and unforgettable memories. In the morning just at the moment when we were disembarking for our morning walk, several Galápagos sea lions welcomed us on shore. Countless blue-footed boobies all along the trail were a true delight to observe. They were very busy with their both famous and hilarious courtship display. Española marine iguanas were very busy as well. Many of them were digging holes on the hard rocky terrain of the Island.
In the afternoon, a stroll on a paradisiacal coralline white sand beach was a favorite activity for many. In this place we mingled with a big colony of Galápagos sea lions. We all also enjoyed the marine world. Snorkeling, swimming or from the glass bottom boat we could appreciate how beautiful the marine ecosystems are. Snorkeling in the Galápagos can be really spectacular. The waters are very clear and the variety and abundance of life you find is just amazing. Today was not the exception. Among the many different species we observed I want to refer to the natural history one of them in particular. The hieroglyphic hawkfish (Cirrhitus rivulatus) is a true piece of art. This fish has a unique and attractive coloration. Its general color is light olive-brown with a peculiar pattern of wavy markings in bright blue-green. This unusual pattern of lines radiating all over their bodies beginning at their eyes, may serve to confuse predators. This fish remains still, perched on its pectoral fins, blending with the background, often in shaded areas. They live in rocky reefs, boulder slopes and on walls from where they wait, camouflaged and hoping to ambush small fish and invertebrates.
