Floreana Island

It has been another great day; we have seen and done a lot. Floreana is an island very rich in human history; therefore our guests left early this morning to visit the so-called Post Office barrel and go through the mail. This is a custom that has been going on since 1793, when the system was set up by the whalers that used to sail these waters. Several of our guests picked up mail to be hand-delivered upon returning home.

The rest of the morning was focussed on water activities around Champion Islet, a tuff cone just offshore from Floreana. We had a fantastic time swimming with large schools of tropical fish and of course the ubiquitous sea lion, as always the stars. We encountered large gangs of playful and curious juveniles that seemed to be expecting us. The glass-bottom boat was another option for those wanting to enjoy the marine ecosystem without getting wet, and here too we saw a lot. The sea lion pups seemed to be just as fascinated to see these faces peering at them through the glass as we were to be spectators of their wonderful underwater antics.
