Española Island
This was our first full day in the magical Galapagos Archipelago. Española, the island we visited, is the oldest of the island group and is a place where one can see lots of species endemic to this particular place in the world. This is due to the great distance between the island and any other landmass, as isolation is the key for evolution. This isolation, plus the absence of large predators, has allowed the species to change or evolve, producing therefore endemic species.
In the afternoon we focused on water activities in Gardner Bay. During our deep-water snorkeling outing around turtle islet, I took the ship’s underwater video camera to the snorkeling site, and it was superb! We saw large schools of tropical fish all over the place. Some of our guests were lucky enough to swim with a white-tipped reef shark, but they knew they had nothing to fear as Galapagos sharks are vegetarian.
