Santa Cruz Island
During the present week, we had guests from different places, ages and backgrounds, which is what makes our voyage as interesting as it is, but they all have something in common…they all care. It is such a rewarding experience to hear kids on our trip making comments about the abundance of wildlife, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, iguanas and sea turtles. They can’t wait to return to their schools and share their experiences. The kids will go back to their homes, perhaps not knowing that the only reason why we want to preserve this place is because of them.
Today our guests had a very special experience. They visited the very famous Charles Darwin Research Station, located on Santa Cruz Island.
The Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands (CDF), an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization, was created in 1959 with the aim of promoting and facilitating the conservation of the unique ecosystems and native species of plants and animals of the Galapagos Islands, through scientific research and educational programs. The statutes of the CDF stated that these objectives were to be achieved through the establishment of a field station in the Galapagos, as the operational branch, called the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), inaugurated in 1964.
Shortly after our arrival at Academy Bay, on Santa Cruz Island, we were able to disembark and visit the enclosures where some of the very famous giant tortoises are found. It was transcendent to see these living reminders of ancient times, to sit with them in quiet solitude, and to share with them the meditative state of an unhurried existence.
