Isabela and Fernandina Islands

What a wonderful day! The whole day has been no less than amazing. One of the best panga rides this year along the coast of Punta Vicente Roca, located in the most western side of Isabela Island. Excellent weather and sea conditions were the perfect background for wonderful sightings. At midday while having lunch, a very large pod of common dolphins were spotted in the Bolivar channel on our way to Fernandina. They were really magical, at one point around six hundred of them were seen. Many of them were leaping totally out of the water. Some of our guests were looking at them from the dining room, and one of our guests even mentioned that he was writing an e-mail from the radio station while watching the dolphins through the window. In the afternoon during our visit to Fernandina Island, we were astounded to be able to watch marine iguanas digging burrows! It was so exciting for me and for all of us to observe the big efforts some of the female marine iguanas were making while working hard in the sand. Some of the iguanas were even fighting for the possession of a newly made nesting hole. To top the day off many Galapagos penguins were seen in a feeding frenzy fishing along with brown pelicans, Audubon shearwaters and Noddy terns. A beautiful sunset marked the end of a remarkable day.
