Floreana Island
Nothing could be more promising than a beautiful sunrise! Early in the morning, a beautiful “forget me not-blue” colored sky appeared before our eyes, when heading up to Post Office Bay, on Floreana Island.
This island is known for having one of the most historical places in the Galapagos, the Post Office barrel. It was originally erected sometime around 1793, and the original idea was to facilitate the delivery of mail to England and the United States. Letters left in the barrel by sailors would be picked up by homebound ships and eventually delivered to their destinations, even when they sometimes took over a couple of years to do so.
Today, our guests experienced the ancient tradition developed by whalers back in the early seventeen hundreds. Taking some of the postcards left in the barrel, our guests will continue with the tradition and will not let die the ingenious idea that carried the words of hope from sailors to their families.
