Fernandina Island
Arrows falling down from the skies, but…are they really arrows? No, they are boobies, hundreds, maybe a thousand blue-footed boobies in an intense feeding frenzy diving all around us. It happened today, off Fernandina, the youngest island. Oliver Bok, a 7-year-old Polaris guest, exclaimed, “They are dropping in like they were struck dead” And there were more than boobies; there were all the sea creatures one can imagine. Bryde’s whales, bottle- nose dolphins, sea lions, tunas, and storm petrels. No one wanted to miss the feast of plentyness, neither did we.
Our Zodiac spotted it first, but the feeling was so overwhelming that we had to share it, and we shared it. A second Zodiac joined us, and then a third. The sighting was really far away from the Polaris, the whole ship tried to catch up with us, but the animals had their own plans, and as unexpectedly as they came, they left. But I still feel the necessity of giving out today’s great experience, so through the website, I share it with you all. We, human beings from planet earth, were immersed in the middle of wild ocean creatures, feeding themselves. We were completely ignored by the tropical whale and its calf, by the many dolphins, and the diving boobies. We were neither part of their diet, nor interfering with it; we were just very fortunate spectators of the web of life in the sea.
