Isabela & Fernandina Islands

We had an encounter with a most intriguing creature of the oceans that appeared from nowhere. Was it a unicorn? Was it an unknown, enchanted living thing? It probably was enchanted, as we are traveling in the “Encantadas,” an archipelago surrounded by magic rich seas, boiling in life and beauty.

This nearly mythological animal, found on the western realm of Galapagos, was none other than a green sea turtle moving through the waters with a tiny decoration in its nostril. I believe the “horn” of our unicorn was just a spine. It might have gotten it by eating as much algae as possible too anxiously and too fast, without caring about the sea urchins on the reef. In other words, this was one very greedy sea turtle! And Punta Vicente Roca was just the ideal place for such a creature.

The underwater rocks were covered with all kinds of living organisms. Algae of many colors, snails, corals, sea urchins, sea stars, sea cucumbers. There was a whole spectrum of living beings enjoying the abundance of the rich cool upwellings of the Cromwell Current. We, Polaris guests and staff, also enjoyed the view, the magic and the mystery of colors and forms, and dreamed a little about underwater castles, kind-hearted ocean dragons and sweet turtle-unicorns.
