Floreana Island

Seasons change, and the animals of the Galapagos know when that happens: we all know it, we can see it and we can feel it.

This is the warm season, when the waters are in the nice 80’s, when the ocean is clear, painted in all tonalities of blue, from turquoise to deep sapphire. This is the time when land birds nest, enjoying the greenery that has returned to the trees, the insects and fruits that are also back.

Yellow warblers are breeding in Punta Cormorant, and a bright yellow couple is nesting right at the landing site. They had a perfect cup-shaped nest of vegetable matter placed in the canopy of a black mangrove. Three chicks waited for their parents to feed them. We saw the whole procedure: the father, with a bright chestnut crown and chestnut streaking on his breast, came first. He brought a huge worm. The female came too, singing, with another piece of food. Three little gray immature warblers showed their beaks to get lunch. They each got a bit.

We also received our share of highlights: warblers, flamingoes, turtles and a wonderful sunset; all coming together to complete a great day in Floreana.
