Española Island

White heads, orange beaks, a raft of living beings offshore of Española Island. Who are these creatures just floating altogether, those huge birds of the seas? They are the majestic waved albatrosses finally returning to the Galapapgos. Since this is the first week of the year they have been spotted around, we can officially record in our logbook that on April 7, 2002, they have arrived!

Where have they been for the past four months? Southeast from the islands, offshore Peru, where the Humboldt Current provided them with plenty of food. They are pelagic birds, which means, they can spend their lives at sea. However, there is one thing they can not do while keeping afloat, and that is to nest.

Therefore, every year they come back to Española, to find their mates, and produce offspring. We did not expect to see them around yet. However, after lunch Captain Marcelo Rojas, took us along the southern cliffs of the island; with the hope of finding the first albatrosses, and we did.
