Santa Cruz Island
Our day started by getting into the Zodiacs at 7:30am. We headed to a dock near the Charles Darwin Research Station. We walked until we saw a cage of giant land tortoises. We took a couple of pictures of them and then walked on. We walked until we saw a special tortoise named Lonesome George. George is the last surviving giant land tortoise from the island of Pinta. A scientist brought him from Pinta to the station in 1972. People think he is over 100 years old. They have brought two girl tortoises to George’s home so they could hopefully mate. The girls are both from Wolf volcano at the edge of the island of Isabela. What we have learned is that not all tortoises get along very one another. The station has some newly hatched tortoises, which are called by numbers until someone volunteers to name a tortoise, and then a picture of the tortoise and the name will be on the web. Sara named tortoise #19 Sandy. Sandy was born in 2001 and maybe she will be on the web next week.
