Floreana Island

Today we spent the whole day visiting the island of Floreana, which is one of only four inhabited islands in the archipelago. It is an island with many volcanic features: as you approach it you can see hundreds of cinder and tuff cones, which tell you about the relatively recent and very active volcanic history that this island has had.

In the morning our guests had a great time swimming with many young playful sea lions, part of a large colony inhabiting the bay. They seemed to be expecting us with as much anticipation as we were they: it was awesome!

In the afternoon we moved to a different location, Punta Cormorant, where we enjoyed the uniqueness of the Galapagos flora, a representative of which you can see in the picture, Scalesia villosa or long-haired Scalesia. This particular genus represents the plant kingdom’s best example of adaptive radiation in the Galapagos. This endemic genus, one of seven, consists of fifteen separate unique species and a total of 19 members if one includes subspecies and varieties.
