Santa Cruz Island
There is time for everything!
Our full day on the island of Santa Cruz gave us all the opportunity to visit one of the most famous research centers in the world. The Charles Darwin Foundation and the National Park Service have created several programs to help in the conservation of this fragile archipelago. Programs such as the rearing and repatriation of land iguanas and giant tortoises and the biological control now applied to the extermination of the cottony scale insect, a plague that is affecting some of the plants species in the Galapagos, are among the most successful achievements.
But no matter what we did today, nothing could compare to the thrilling experience of seeing the ancient giant tortoises in the wild. Walking through a forest where tortoises had roamed freely since their arrival long time ago, was definitely the highlight of the day.
Even after a full day like today, there is always time to relax and enjoy the sunset, a nice cocktail and of course the company of those who are sharing this unique adventure here on these enchanted islands.
