Española Island
Today we spent a wonderful day on the island of Española, where we visited the eastern corner, Punta Suarez, in the morning and encountered several different bird species, such as albatrosses, dancing blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, swallow tailed gulls and Española mockingbirds. They were all there, and at their very best, as though they had been expecting visitors! During lunch we lifted anchor and repositioned to the west of Española, at Gardner Bay, where we enjoyed water activities. We were swimming among different kinds of tropical fish, sharks, sea turtles, rays, sea lions and a particularly spectacular and unusual sighting: the zebra moray eel. It was very exciting to see this rare creature, and about record size – an amazing four feet long! The Galapagos Marine Reserve also had several treats in store for those of us who opted to take the glass bottom boat: we saw a variety of colorful reef fish, and the highlights were a marble sting-ray and a tiger snake eel.
Due to their varied climate, ocean currents and favorable geographical position, the Galapagos Islands are outstanding for their flora, fauna and underwater life.
