Genovesa Island
Genovesa is often called the “island of the birds”. It is estimated that around one million birds make this beautiful, natural, gem of an island their home. This incredible number of birds is found in just 5.4 square miles. Being a bird lover, Genovesa Island is like birds’ heaven for me. Not only is it marvelous to see them just a few feet from you, but also there is a real thrill in being able to observe their behavior. Among our guests this week we have had a group from the Audubon Society, and this small island is the most appropriate final visitor’s site for avid bird watchers. The list of birds they have put together with us this week is pretty amazing. Today we added to that list: frigate birds with their pouches fully inflated, comical and colorful red-footed boobies, elegant swallow-tailed gulls, and loud and beautiful red-billed tropicbirds were just a few examples of the magnificent avifauna that we observed on Genovesa. All these bird species, with their beauty and naïveté, were the perfect ending to a trip that for many will change their lives forever. Birders and non-birders, nature lovers and enthusiastic travelers are all impacted and astonished by what they have seen and experienced in this unique Archipelago. Our guests will cherish the wonderful memories from this trip. I am certain that now they can easily understand why I love the Galapagos Islands and these exceptional creatures.
