Española Island
There is no other place like it in the Galapagos. Española Island is considered one of the oldest islands in this isolated archipelago. The combination of landscapes makes it a “one of a kind” island. There are flat, sandy, coral beaches, where sea lions and marine iguanas spend hours under the equatorial sun. The varied shapes of the wild coast reveals an incredible beauty. The abundance of animal life, the sea birds species, reptiles and mammals, are far beyond belief!
As our first full day in the Galapagos, Española proved to be a wonderful initiation. Sea lions were the welcoming committee. While basking on the rocks or sleeping on the beach, these marine mammals can perform the most intriguing postures. On the other hand, our encounters with them in the water revealed how specialized and adapted these creatures are for the marine environment. There, they are the masters.
Surprises are always welcome on our outings. Some things appear out of nowhere and claim the complete attention of the visitor. The mating dances of the blue footed boobies and the albatross were among the favorites today. But we were really amazed when a pair of hawks, despite the close proximity of our guests, decided to mate. They perched on a rock after a full display of flying and attacking techniques performed by the male hawk.
As a result of all these experiences, the morning outing was outstanding. The happy faces of everyone on the Polaris revealed our contentment. The good news is there are still many islands to visit. This is only the beginning of our trip…
