Floreana Island
Floreana is a late stage of a shield volcano; it’s a place with many parasitic cones, tuff and cinder cones, which can be seen as you approach the island. We spent the whole day today on Floreana, visiting three different locations: Post Office Bay, Champion Islet and Cormorant Point. What our guests enjoyed the most was swimming with the stars of the islands “the Galapagos sea lions”! They followed us the entire time that we were snorkeling and had a lot of fun with us.
At Champion the currents contain a lot of nutrients. Therefore many plankton feeding species can be seen swimming against the flow of the ocean water. We saw many brightly colored fish. But the species that I like the most of all the tropical fishes, are the damselfish. They are considered one of the most primitive labroids, because of the condition and arrangement of their facial ligaments and lower pharyngeal jaw struts. They are also able to change their sex from male to female. This system insures that there are always both males and females in the schools; insuring mating.
