Genovesa Island

This picture shows many curious faces. They were all looking at Polaris visitors, enjoying the morning on Bird Island, or Genovesa.

These feathered creatures, which could not focus on any other object than us, are juvenile red-footed boobies. Like any other young being on planet earth, they are just beginning to discover the world. Novelty fascinates them, and today we were the novelty.

Red-footed boobies are the only boobies in Galapagos with prehensile feet. They enjoy perching on the trees, on the ropes of the ship, and sometimes even on peoples arms. One of their favorites landing spots on the island is this pair of wooden towers.

These markers are important navigational aids. They help the Captain enter Darwin Bay, which is actually a collapsed volcanic caldera. The markers support solar panels, which provide light at night. However, the lights sometimes won’t turn on, as guano often covers up the panels. Luckily we know they were cleaned and repaired just last week so we will be able to use them to get out of the caldera safely tonight!
