Floreana Island
The day began early with a visit to the Post Office barrel where many guests dropped and picked up mail. Swimming and snorkeling activities kept us busy for the rest of the morning. Following lunch, a siesta and a presentation on Geology, we took a pleasant afternoon walk.
Floreana is one of those places that leave us with a feeling of complete peacefulness. As we walked through the arid vegetation zone our naturalists pointed out the adaptations these plants have that allow them to tolerate 6 or 7 months drought each year. In these coastal lowland plants there is a high degree of endemism.
Our guests enjoyed watching and photographing the intertidal organisms; of course the Sally lightfoot, or red lava, crab Grapsus grapsus were one of the most abundant organisms we saw. They are so brightly colored, with red above and blue below, that no visitor could possibly miss them. This afternoon we watched a brilliant pair of double decker mating crabs scuttling across the jet-black lava.
