Bartolome and Santiago Islands

This was one of the most outstanding visits of the week. We started our day with an early walk to the summit of Bartolome Island. We were extremely lucky, because not only did we enjoy that magnificent view, but to our surprise some of us also spied whales spouting and manta rays leaping in the distance.

After the hike we came back to the Polaris to have a delicious breakfast, and to get ready for swimming, snorkeling, and our glass bottom boat (GBB) excursions. Our guests had an extremely enjoyable snorkel outing; they swam with the endemic Galapagos penguins, which were feeding on tiny fish in the area.

Those who took a walk across a golden sand dune to another crescent beach (see photo) found the nesting sites of the Pacific green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas. These marine turtles are seriously endangered in many places around the world, but they are abundant in Galapagos. In addition to the nests, we saw several turtles and white tipped reef sharks cruising along close to the shore. And to think we did all of this before lunch…!
