Floreana Island

We had another phenomenal day today, and everyone enjoyed themselves! The morning started with a magical early, pre-breakfast outing. After breakfast our activities took place in the water. There were different outings including glass bottom boating, and bay and deep water snorkeling. On all of these we encountered large schools of tropical fish, and some sea lions. The sea lions are, of course, the stars of the islands and they were right there having fun with us, teasing us and inviting us to dive with them. Some extremely lucky snorkelers watched plunge diving blue-footed boobies. The marine life of the Galapagos is exceptionally rich for the tropics. The combination of cool upwelling waters in some parts and warm tropical waters in others allows for an astounding diversity of marine life.

When we got back to the pangas, guess what? Willy, our Hotel Manager surprised us with his mobile hot CHOCOLATE STATION. Cocoa served from a Zodiac…

In the afternoon we landed at Punta Cormorant which is a great place for botanists. We saw several of the endemic genera of plants that have been isolated long enough to become unique to the islands. As we walked beside a brackish lagoon, we spotted flamingos and had an up close look at a brilliant yellow warbler as seen in today’s photo. These tiny birds are familiar to Americans since they range from Alaska and Canada to southern Peru. Today was a full day and we saw everything we hoped and expected to see, and then some!
