Floreana Island

Another magnificent day in the islands, with the best snorkeling in Galapagos! This morning our route took us to a small islet, Champion. The islet is made up of an eroded tuff cone and is bathed in an ocean full of the most amazing marine life. The steep cliffs have walls covered with black coral that is home to myriad reef fish, sharks, rays and turtles.

Champion is home to large colonies of the Galapagos sea lions. There is no better time of the year to catch these amazingly playful marine mammals; these months are their equivalent to the “teenage years”, as the sea lions are mostly about 5 to 6 months old. Just like adolescents of virtually every other animal species on this planet, they demonstrate an incredibly gregarious nature at this stage of their development. It is truly an experience to come once face to face with these adorable animals, in an inter-specific interaction that could never, ever become boring. It is no wonder that one becomes addicted to these islands!
