Española Island

Days pass by, weeks pass by, the earth spins around and around, but the Galapagos creatures seem like they’re frozen in time.

New people arrive to the islands, seeking to absorb beauty and knowledge. They leave Galapagos with wonderful never-thought-of feelings about life and its beginnings. More guests arrive, learn, love and leave again. But the iguanas remain statue-like, immobile, like still witnesses of our passing through the Galapagos life cycle.

And fortunately we can say that the only things we are leaving behind are footprints. Tourism does not have much impact on Galapagos animal behavior, and as palpable evidence there is this picture of marine iguanas sunbathing less than a foot away from my camera.

Iguanas did not care about our presence; neither did the mockingbirds and boobies. The only ones that showed some concern today were the very protective sea lion mothers. But that is very understandable as we are at the peak of their birthing season. We encountered several recently born babies (some still had their placenta attached) with proud and caring mothers.

Anyhow, the iguanas remained motionless.
