Santa Cruz Island
From the moment we awoke and found ourselves anchored in Academy Bay, we felt the excitement on board the Polaris. From the dining room we could glimpse the many houses of the town of Puerto Ayora with its lush vegetation and colorful flowers. We hadn’t seen “civilization” for a while, so our guests couldn’t believe their eyes. We had been among sea lions and boobies, so it was hard to imagine a place in this archipelago with people and buildings
Once we had landed and walked around some of our guests were immediately charmed by the beauty of this Galapagos town. Here, the main form of transportation is by bike and the streets are clean, scented with the salt of the ocean breeze. Everyone smiles and greets you on the roads.
At the Charles Darwin Research Station our cheerfulness increased as we learned about the great success of the tortoise and land iguana breeding programs. Puerto Ayora is a good example for all the world of how nature and people can live together in harmony.
However I must remark, that the two people who were the most excited to be visiting Puerto Ayora, were Polaris’ two “endemic” naturalists. Daniel and Rafael began the day with huge smiles since they were headed home and of course would visit their moms.
