Bartolome & Santiago Islands

Before I knew it, they were all around me. My heart was pumping at full speed and I found myself frozen in the middle of them. The clock alarm went off and I woke up, lost in the middle of thoughts and dreams, unable to articulate a word. Suddenly, I recognized my room; I knew then where I was, and where I was supposed to be going. Meanwhile guests were gathering up in the reception, ready to go and start a new day, their last day in the Galapagos Islands.

It was six thirty in the morning when I joined up with my group at reception. Surprisingly enough, the kids of this voyage were there too; ready to do a walk that would take us to the very summit of Bartolome Island.

When we disembarked, the barren view of the island gave us all the feeling of landing on the moon. Kids were leading the way. The summit of Bartolome was 372 steps away from sea level. The view from the top was worth every step, every breath. It was not only the landscape, but also the history behind it. Massive volcanic explosions and lava flows millions of years ago, had made up the scenery that we could enjoy.

Later in the morning we headed to the beach of Bartolome to experience another wonderful day in the Galapagos. Nice waves crashing on the shore gave us the real meaning of a wet landing. It was sunny, breezy, and just perfect!

The sunny breeze and the water activities stimulated our appetite. We were ready to come back and devour whatever the galley had prepared as our farewell lunch.

This past week has been perfect. Our guests keep talking about their overall experience. Their faces look sad when they remember that today is the last day. But there is no such thing as the last day in the Enchanted Islands. Galapagos is a dream, and as every dream, it would come back someday, somehow. You just have to let yourself go and let the memories wrap around you, taking you deep inside this never-ending dream. Just like I do every night.
