Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island
The teenagers are out, enjoying the view of town, basking in the sun along the pier, showing off their youth and beauty… We could make up a story about these young iguanas that shamelessly have come to the main dock of town to sunbathe. And why shouldn’t they? This is their island after all. They don’t mind sharing it with human beings, and it is more fun anyway.
They are juvenile marine iguanas, probably not yet sexually mature, so younger than 10 years old. They all faced in the same direction, not exactly for enjoying a better view, but because they wanted to cool off a bit.
In a town of 10,000 people it is just amazing to be able to share such a place with other living creatures. And they were so relaxed! They didn’t care about the noisy pangas, neither about the many guests embarking and disembarking. People walking, people riding bicycles; for the iguanas it was all the same. They were happy taking pleasure in the breeze coming from the sea and the view of the turquoise water of Academy Bay.
