Española Island

Española Island is one of the oldest islands in the archipelago and has many birds and animals to show to our guests. This morning we disembarked on a point called “Punta Suarez.” It was amazing. Right there on the landing dock we had many juvenile sea lions waiting for us and playing in the water. This is the season when all the females are giving birth. We also saw some newborn babies of only some hours old. Close to the sea lions we saw a big colony of marine iguanas in different shades of red.

In the afternoon we had a totally different experience in the water. Some people were swimming with sea lions, some chose to go on the glass bottom boat, and some went to the beach.

On the beach the sea lions were the main attraction. Some of them were nursing, some playing with sand, and many babies playing close to the water. I saw one in particular that seemed to be calling me with its flipper. It was a babe about two weeks old, was alone, and maybe waiting for its mother to come back from the ocean to feed him. The good thing in the Galapagos is that these creatures don’t have any natural enemies on land, so this pup can spend all day playing on the beach without any problem. It was so nice to see it right there posing for me; maybe it was because I told him I would make him the star of today’s Polaris Daily Expedition Report!
