Genovesa Island
We are at latitude 0o 18.82’ North, longitude 89o 56.86’ West. It is the end of December, and even though we are a few minutes north of the Equator (so basically in the Northern Hemisphere,) it is sunny, warm and pleasant. Soon we’ll be celebrating Christmas, without any snow of course, but it will be a white Christmas any way.
White because of the beautiful trees covered by whitish lichens, white because of the guano spread on the lava rocks and on the vegetation as well.
Over the white we have the red ornaments: red feet of red-footed boobies, the red eye rings of swallow tailed gulls, the red feet of Galapagos doves and red eye rings of the female great frigate birds. We see a few blue ornaments too, the beaks of the red footed and the feet of the blue-footed boobies.
So, we count with the appropriate decoration for the holidays, on the islands and also on board the Polaris, where we already have our traditional Christmas tree. Therefore our spirits are up, waiting for the 25th of December while surrounded by the colors of Christmas in the Galapagos Islands.
