Española Island

These islands give you a strange energy that makes you see the world in a different way. The magic of the islands causes a change in our guests and our staff alike. Today we spent the day on an island called Española. We disembarked to explore the shoreline of the western point, Punta Suarez. Here while walking along the beach trail and then following it inland, we saw many different creatures. There were sea lions, marine iguanas and one of the most curious and fearless birds of the island, the Española mocking bird.

One of the most impressive experiences of Galapagos is the way that the animals behave without fear towards human beings. The animals move along, behaving completely at ease and so close to you that it is unbelievable. To really enjoy their innocent friendliness, one should sit for awhile on a beach. The mocking birds come to investigate you, the sea lions sniff at your legs, and it is both funny and interesting to study their movements and behaviors. A sea lion’s life seems so carefree for, like many of the creatures of these islands they don’t have any natural enemies on land. The pups and juveniles spend almost all day resting on the beach without a care. Sea lions need only a couple of hours for fishing and then they come back to play and roll around on the beach.

I think Española Island is one of the loveliest islands of this archipelago, both for the panoramic views and its wild life. Today I took the ship’s camera and sat for a while on the beach watching the young sea lions playing with a rock at the water’s edge. Nearby I saw a small group of adult sea lions. One big male was very happily resting, surrounded by three females. He protected these girls by guarding his territory against all invading males, large and small.
