Santa Cruz Island

Oh, yes adventure sure is part of the package. Take a good look at this picture. It was a coincidence that the three “do it all” buses (as we were called, since we went all over the island) met on a narrow road. One of them pulled slightly off onto the muddy shoulder, and since this is the rainy season, it got stuck. We shared a moment of laughter, we took pictures, we made some funny comments and then we pushed!

I was grateful not to be in the shoes of those who were pushing (I took the picture instead) even though they were actually all wearing rubber boots. This expedition has been full of adventure and today things were spiced up with just the right ingredients: tortoises, vermilion flycatchers, orchids and mud!

Everyone has been in high spirits all week long and we have shared unique and unforgettable moments. This afternoon someone commented “what a great place to be stuck”. And it is true that we were in the beautiful lush highlands of Santa Cruz Island, enjoying a fertile green landscape. Such a place is not what one would expect when thinking of an “arid island” stereotype. Galapagos giant tortoises roam among the hills and in the background the blue ocean reminds us we are on one of the Enchanted Islands. As the sun sets we board the Polaris and share with our new friends the magic of yet another great day. We are eager for the next one...
