Fernandina Island
Having sailed overnight from Floreana Island into the youngest, westernmost area of the archipelago, we could appreciate far in the distance the impressive volcanoes of Isabela and Fernandina. It truly is difficult to believe that these volcanoes could be hundreds of thousands of years old, and yet they look as though they were formed yesterday - what a difference to the much older, green island of Floreana.
We started off this morning with a panga ride along the coastline of Isabela where we saw many fascinating things. We were particularly impressed, however, with the patience and courage of the female marine iguanas laying their eggs in such dangerous places as the slopes and cliffs of Ecuador Volcano, in order to perpetuate their species.
Today’s snorkeling was undertaken in the same area, Punta Vicente Roca, was full of surprises, we had the luck to swim with Galapagos penguins, green pacific turtles, sea lions, flightless cormorants, and even an oceanic sun fish, or Mola mola as you might know it. What a day - clear waters and sunny skies, great temperatures and calm waters.
This afternoon we visited one of the most pristine areas in the world, Punta Espinoza on the northwestern coast of Fernandina. Here we were witnesses to the courtship of flightless cormorants – between the male sea lions patrolling their colony, nesting iguanas and courting birds, it indeed looks like Galapagos reproduction never stops!
Once back on board Polaris we enjoyed this beautiful sunset over Fernandina Volcano all while enjoying a cocktail from our teak deck.
