Española Island
Today we disembarked on one of the oldest island in Galapagos, Española Island. Española is an island found in the southern part of the archipelago. The landscape here is unusual because of the many different cliffs and lava tunnels that form special shapes like the one we call the “blow hole.” This is a lava tunnel close to the water, with a hole at the top of it. When the waves fill the inside of the tunnel, there is so much pressure inside that the only way to escape is through the hole in the roof. The water forms a big column of water similar to a whale spout.
In the afternoon we visited an area called Gardner Bay, one of the best spots that we have to snorkel. However, there were a variety of manners to get a view of marine life. Some decided to go on the “deep water snorkel” and see sharks, some decided to stay in shallower water and play with sea lions, and other guests visited the Glass Bottom Boat for a while. I spent the afternoon at the beach and enjoyed with others watching the sea lions resting on the beach and playing with our younger guests that we have on board. We saw a young sea lion playing with sand for several minutes, and who afterwards got so tired that he decided to go and hold another friend for a while and play with him, too. We finished the day with a great sunset.
