Santa Cruz Island

Hope you all had a wonderful day, as it was a real nice one for me, too. This is actually my favorite island. I guess it has a lot to do with the fact that I’ve lived here for several years now and it has become my home. I’ve gotten to know it pretty well, from the dry northern side to the humid southern side we all felt today: from the shops, cars and people of the main town of Puerto Ayora to the calm and tranquility of the highlands. The island is really a great place to live and a must to visit.

Santa Cruz is truly the heart of Galapagos. The island is the second largest in the archipelago and the most populated. About 13,000 people live here and most of them work in the tourist industry, though there are also a fair number who work for the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station, as well as for various municipal offices. Many islanders dedicate their lives to fishing and those up in the highlands to farming and cattle ranching.

While the residents of Santa Cruz were going about their daily routines we were carefully observing the tortoises at the research station. Later we visited the twin pit craters and the green lush vegetation of the humid Scalesia zone.
