Española Island

We always experience something new on Española Island. The weather was perfect today. Our guests enjoyed walking close to the shoreline, seeing many different marine creatures. Some male sea lions were fighting for territory. The marine iguanas were doing the same, because they are in the middle of their breeding season. But not only the males were fighting, also the females. This is the time when they are trying to find a place to lay their eggs, which is difficult in such a rocky terrain.

After the walk in the morning, we sailed to the other side of Española Island, known as Gardner bay. This is a beautiful place full of wildlife, where we had the opportunity to go snorkeling. Most of our guests chose to go to deep waters to explore the rocky underwater floor. We went around an island named turtle rock. We saw many different fish but what we really liked was finding a few white tip reef sharks and some spotted eagle rays. After snorkeling we felt like going to the beach and walking on beautiful white sand were we saw a big colony of sea lions. When we got to the beach I told some of our guests that last week we had seen a baby sea lion that looked as if it had been abandoned. I searched for him this afternoon, and after a while I finally found it. It was just like my friend last week, so I talked to him for a while, in sea lion language of course, and he told me that he was doing fine, mom had come back! So I have a message for our guests that were on board the Polaris last week. The sea lion baby is doing just fine, as you can all see in this picture.
