Floreana Island

Today it was difficult to get out of the water. The temperature was just perfect, the colours of fish and ocean together were astounding, and the sea lions were too much fun.

So our snorkeling outing lasted a very long time. We got out of the water briefly just to rest for a while on board the Zodiacs, and then jumped in again because those sea lions didn’t want to let us go.

They were even tempting the people on board the glass bottom boat. Jumping and splashing water on us, was their way to invite us to join in their games in the blue waters of Champion Islet.

But as I said, the colours of the fish were at their best, because of the pristine waters of today’s morning. This streamer hogfish is one of the largest and most peculiar bony fish in the Galapagos. And this one is not just a regular streamer hogfish; this is a super male, which means that it is now in the terminal phase of its life cycle, in which it started off as a female. However that is too complicated a matter to explain over the website. Those of you who have been on board know all about it by now, and for those of you thinking about visiting the Galapagos Islands in the near future, I promise you I shall unveil the mystery behind the life of such unusual fish, when you come on board.
