Española Island

Today we had an excellent outing to visit Española Island. In the morning we had the opportunity to disembark at a site called Punta Suarez. Here we saw many different creatures, which are endemic to the Galapagos. We saw mocking birds, Darwin finches, marine iguanas and lava lizards, all of which are unique to this island. We must not overlook the seabirds, especially the blue-footed boobies, which have started to do their courtship dances. We saw many male blue foots lifting their feet in a dance to attract a mate. What a show! All of our guests enjoyed it!

In the afternoon we had the chance to go snorkeling. Or, for those who don’t like to get wet, there was an option in our glass bottom boat to see the many fish. I chose the deep-water snorkeling outing and took some of our guests to “roca tortuga” or turtle rock. The water visibility was lovely and we saw, not only fish and sharks, but also marine turtles feeding on algae. Fantastic!

I took the under water camera and made a video to show at our evening recap session. I got some good pictures of several of the different fish species, but liked this one especially. This is a large banded blenny. These fish feed on plankton and spend most of their time sitting motionless on the rocks. This one seems to have been watching me, and I can’t imagine what he was thinking.
