Bartholomew Island

We started very early this morning hiking to the summit of Bartholomew. This is a satellite island, just off Santiago, that offers a most spectacular volcanic landscape. When you look around, you feel as if you might be on the moon or some other planet because of all the parasitic cones. This was a real photo opportunity for everybody!

Coming back to the Polaris we were welcomed with a very delicious and abundant breakfast. Following the meal we made a beach landing and then took a walk over a sand dune to look for sharks and rays in the ocean’s shallows. Many of our guests next went snorkeling while others enjoyed swimming from a beautiful golden beach. Some of us were extremely lucky and swam with marine iguanas and penguins! There were also glass bottom boat outings so anyone who wished to stay dry could still see rays and colorful fishes. During lunch we weighed anchor in order to move toward James Bay on the northwestern coast of Santiago Island.

The afternoon started with a trip to a black beach at an area called South James Bay or Puerto Egas. Here we had our last chance to snorkel and swim and we were happy to be accompanied again, by sea lions and different kinds of tropical fish. After enjoying the water activities we walked along the coastline of the island searching for the fur seal colony. This was our last chance for pictures and as on all the other days, we got many! We will take them, as well as many excellent memories home with us when we depart tomorrow.
