Española Island

Our first full day this week on the Galapagos was amazing. There was so much to see, enjoy and appreciate. It is sincerely difficult to summarise in just a few words so many feelings. Sea lions were all around us. Seeing these marine mammals was truly a delight for all of us. We observed them in every position you can imagine. They performed a real nature show! Some of the sea lions were very close to us; in some cases just a few inches away. It was hard for our guests to believe that these were wild animals!

The sea lions were not, however the only animals we thoroughly enjoyed. We saw huge numbers of colourful marine iguanas, which made us realize how rich the marine ecosystem around this island is. Some of the marine bird species were spectacular, both in numbers and behaviour. The blue-footed boobies were courting, dancing, and making a lot of noise and the endemic waved albatrosses were simply beautiful (see photo).

In the afternoon the snorkelling was fascinating as well. Sharks, rays, sea turtles, big sea stars and countless tropical fish were everywhere. There is no doubt that Española today was unforgettable.
