Fernandina Island
Today in the afternoon we visited the island of Fernandina. This beautiful island is by far my favorite one. Fernandina is the youngest island of the Galapagos archipelago. This island is considered the jewel on the crown due to its pristine conditions. Breathtaking young black lava flows cover most of the island. The lava flows look so fresh that they give the impression they are still moving. Mangroves and lava cacti add some color to the lava fields. The blue ocean and the beautiful sky are perfect complements to the most wonderful natural setting you can imagine.
Unique animal species, like the Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants and large marine iguanas make this island their home. A very special sighting today was a close encounter with a Galapagos hawk. This majestic bird of prey was perching quietly on a tree. It was so close that we could see in detail its talons and even its eyes. The hawk was very curious about our presence. At one point we were not even sure who was observing whom. A wonderful sunset marked the end of the day. Reluctantly but happy we all came back on board to share our experiences with our fellow travelers.
