Española Island

We have different experiences every day in each of the islands of this enchanted archipelago and today we visited Espanola, the oldest island. I like this place because of its amazing amount and diversity of animals. And this is the breeding season for many different birds. We found blue-footed boobies dancing; some albatrosses were also performing their courtship, while many marine iguanas rested on the hot lava boulders. It was a spectacular morning hike.

My highlight this morning was an episode with a very hilarious lava lizard, which chased one of our guests. It was very funny because our guest didn’t realize what was going on so she kept moving with the persistent lava lizard following behind. Finally the lizard jumped to her shoes and crunched into a red strap on them. The red strap looked like a fly! That is probably why the lizard had been following our guest. This was so funny that our entire group ended up laughing for a long time.

We had various water activities in the afternoon. Many people saw sharks, turtles, rays and lots of fish during the deep water snorkeling.

On the beach of Gardner bay we saw a lot of sea lions. There was one particular young male sea lion that was trying to “organize” his harem. He was posing for my camera, telling me at the same time that he was the beach master, and the owner of that territory. I took the picture and decided to move away from him, because he was starting to look at me with strange eyes.
