Floreana Island

It is going to be difficult to describe the many feelings that I had this morning. Because today, around Champion Islet, we encountered a pod of four Orcas, and followed them for a long while.

This is the second time in my life that I can see killer whales up close and personal; and when I mean close, I mean really close.

One of our guests spotted them several feet away from the Polaris. Afterward the bridge confirmed that there were indeed Orcas in the area, traveling east from Champion islet. Then, in a matter of a few minutes, we had sent five Zodiacs to ride behind them.

Sea lions also joined us for the party. The top predators of the ocean were passing by, and human beings together with sea lions joined in for the contemplation of these magnificent creatures.

So off we went a few miles away, with one male Orca, two females and one young one, ahead of us. We all cheered up our panga drivers, the captains in our adventure. One could feel the excitement in the air! The sea was blue, the skies clear and the coloration of the killer whales so handsome and distinctive.

I can’t find more words. It was just a fantastic morning!
