Bartolome and Santiago

Today has been one of the most brilliant days of our trip. We have seen a fascinating variety of topics in natural history and learned comprehensible information on developments in the origin and evolution of the Galapagos. However, our experience in the splendor of the underwater world today, was especially unique and fascinating!

In the morning we went snorkeling in the shallows at the base of pinnacle rock at Bartolome Island where there are coral formations that harbor an amazing profusion of invertebrate life. Here in Galapagos the unexpected happens on a regular basis, but it is still always a delightful surprise when it does. We were swimming along the coastline when suddenly we were enveloped in a school of red-tipped cardinal fish. Then a couple of sea lions burst into view like streaking jet fighters. Then, as if to show off, they paused to perform all sorts of aquatic maneuvers. When we encountered a group of curious penguins our interactions with them were something subliminally unbelievable. Swimming alongside several green sea turtles was a final pleasant surprise. This was more excitement than we had anticipated when we set off to snorkel this morning!
