Española Island
Every week is different and each day seems to just get better and better when on a voyage in the Galapagos. Today on Española Island we had an excellent hike among hundreds of nesting blue-footed boobies. Many of their eggs have hatched, others are almost ready to hatch and today some of us were in the right spot at precisely the correct moment! We had an amazing experience! We watched in delight, as a tiny blue-footed booby chick struggled, to get out of its egg. Its father pulled him from the eggshell while the mother observed. The chick was cover with flecks of yolk and the male almost appeared as if he didn’t know what to do. He whistled to his mate who took his place above the chick and sat down upon it ever so gently. What a rare privilege to witness a moment so touching and unique!
This afternoon our adventure continued. We took part in a variety of water activities: snorkeling, glass bottom boating and swimming from a lovely white sand beach. I filmed an underwater video of some of the sharks, rays, sea stars, octopus and fish that we saw which I will show tonight to our guests. On the beach our guests had a marvelous time watching and playing with dozens of sea lions. We also enjoyed studying the curious Española mockingbirds that in today’s photo were involved in a territorial “flick fight”. Today we had a day full of unforgettable experiences.
